Field Trip Pictures....Pumpkins for the Little Pumpkins

Well, I didn't post last week since we were only in school for two of the days due to the smoke from the nearby fires.  My heart goes out to those that are suffering from this terrible firestorm.  However, I have to say that it felt so good to be back in the classroom for the whole week and run our regular classroom routine.
Last week before school was closed we did manage to do a fun exploration on pumpkins with a pumpkin from our school garden.  We measured how tall our pumpkin was in cubes, made predictions about if it would float or sink, and made predictions about how many seeds were in our class pumpkin.
How many seeds do you think are in this pumpkin?

 Slimy...

Counting Seeds

Many students predicted it would be around 9 or 10, like when we counted the number of seeds in our apple.  After splitting up all of the seeds between the table groups and counting them out, we determined that our pumpkin had 224 seeds.

To continue and extend our exploration of pumpkins, we went on our much anticipated (and postponed) field trip to Renker Farm.  On our field trip we enjoyed a wonderful tour of the entire farm and we learned about the 43 different items grown on the farm... .not just pumpkins!

On our field trip we also went through the corn maze and of course picked pumpkins!

We had such a great time at the pumpkin patch!  And believe it or not, we even managed to get in some learning of our letters and numbers between all of our fun and learning about pumpkins and harvest time.

Ocean Trip!

Well, I should have gotten these pictures and post up this last week, but I will admit that I was exhausted after our trip to MacKerricher State Park last week.  This was our much anticipated ocean trip for second grade.  The kids had a great time and really seemed to enjoy themselves.  I have to say that I was a little sad I wasn't out on the rocks this year with the class, but a HUGE thank you to all of the parents who attended as chaperones and made it so I didn't have to worry about the class while they were on the rocks at the tide pools.  From what I heard, this year was a little lower in tide pool creatures than what it has been in years past.  However, the class was able to still see quite a few different sea creatures, including sea stars and quite a few hermit crabs.

Take a look at what we were able to see!

While at MacKerricher State Park we were also able to enjoy an ocean-view lunch, with our good friend the squirrel, Mr. Cheddar.

As a class, we also enjoyed looking at the seals that were sunbathing on the rocks.

We couldn't possibly go all the way to the coast and not enjoy the beach, so we spent quite a bit of time enjoying the warm sand.

Our last stop before getting on the bus to ride back home was the blue whale skeleton where we met with Ranger Fred and he told us some very interesting information about blue whales and the park in general.

What a great trip we had!  This was just one of the fun things we have going on towards the end of our school year.
